On October 18, at the KSBNS 2024 Annual Meeting held at HICO, Gyeongju, we had the privilege of organizing and moderating Symposium 29: Plasticity beyond synapses, astrocyte morphoplasticity. While the concept of brain plasticity is usually associated with neuronal synapses, our goal was to broaden this view by focusing on the plasticity of astrocytes surrounding synapses, which we refer to as morphoplasticity.

The session included four talks:

  • Wuhyun Koh (Institute for Basic Science): Ank2 in Hippocampal Astrocyte Morphogenesis and Memory Formation

  • Ruotian Jiang (Sichuan University): Astrocyte morphological remodeling: at the synapse and beyond

  • Baptiste Lacoste (University of Ottawa): Astroglial Hmgb1 regulates postnatal astrocyte morphogenesis and cerebrovascular maturation

  • Sabina Berretta (Harvard University): Collaborations among peers: astrocyte-neuron interactions in plasticity and brain disorders

Our lab presented recent work on astrocyte morphogenesis and memory. The symposium was highly meaningful for ABCD lab., as it highlighted the emerging concept of astrocyte morphoplasticity and stimulated productive discussions that will shape future research directions and collaborations in the field.
