Upcoming Seminar: Prof. Christine R. Rose
We are excited to host Prof. Christine R. Rose (Institute of Neurobiology, Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf) for our Wednesday seminar series on June 17, 2026. Prof. Rose has made major contributions to our understanding of astrocyte physiology and neuron-glia interactions. Her group's recent work, published in Nature Communications (Meyer et al., 2026), revealed remarkable cellular and subcellular heterogeneity in astrocytic sodium homeostasis, highlighting how sodium dy

2026 West Coast Refresh Trip
After finishing the day on May 22, 2026, our lab made a spontaneous trip to the west coast for a quick refresh. Following a busy week of research, everyone enjoyed the ocean breeze, took photos together, and spent some relaxing time by the sea. The group also enjoyed a clam and seafood dinner while taking a short break from the lab routine. We also celebrated the birthdays of our members born in May (Erva, Kyeong-Seon and Bohyun) during the trip. We hope all ABCD Lab members

Article Published in Experimental & Molecular Medicine (Nature Portfolio)
Two years ago, Dr. Koh, together with colleagues from South Korea, participated in the "Astrocytes in Brain Function and Disease Symposium" held at the Nobel Forum at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden, a venue well known for hosting scientific discussions associated with the Nobel Prize community. At the symposium, leading brain scientists and clinicians gathered to discuss emerging therapeutic strategies targeting astrocytes in brain disorders. Based on these discussions and c

2026 Lab Spring Outing
Our lab recently welcomed a new member, Bohyun Oh. To celebrate, we enjoyed a spring outing at Hanbat Arboretum followed by dinner together. The beautiful scenery and relaxed atmosphere gave us a great opportunity to connect outside the lab and recharge for the new season. We look forward to exciting research and memorable moments together in the future !

Our Article Published in Neural Processing Letters (Nature Portfolio)
On March 16, 2026, our article, “Deep Learning with Zero Initialization: Revisiting Symmetry Breaking and Gradient Flow” has been published in Neural Processing Letters (Nature Portfolio) and is now available online. In this work, we revisit a long-standing assumption in deep learning that zero initialization prevents effective learning due to symmetry issues. We show that this is not necessarily the case. Under certain conditions, neural networks can still learn effectively

Seminar Visit to Università Politecnica delle Marche (UNIVPM)
Dr. Koh visited Università Politecnica delle Marche (UNIVPM) and delivered a seminar introducing the research direction of ABCD Lab. The seminar, titled “Astrocytes in Brain and Cognition Development (ABCD): Investigating autism genes in astrocytes” covered our lab’s approach to understanding how astrocytes contribute to brain development and cognition, with a particular focus on autism-related genes. The talk led to active discussions and meaningful exchanges with researcher
